The Winter Solstice is upon us.
The darkness at this time of year is challenging for me and I always find myself looking forward to the longer days ahead, but something I’ve been working on in 2021 is being more present. Even if I’m going through a phase of feeling particularly lousy, or anxious, or stressed, I have been trying to understand that giving into a perceived sense of urgency and longing for the next phase to start rarely does any good. One of my favorite yoga teachers (Anne Bergeron) wrote in a newsletter recently:
“Darkness is sacred, light is sacred, and the Winter Solstice celebrates both.”
It resonated with me because I feel that its truth reverberates through different areas of my life. While periods of “darkness” are uncomfortable and can feel unfair, I am learning to acknowledge these periods as part of my experience moving through this world and I have found that there’s value in learning to sit and be present with this “darkness” the same way that I would sit and be present with moments of joy and “lightness.” Of course this is not meant to be read as a blanket statement that should be applied to every individual, it’s merely a personal reflection on something that I have been putting thought into recently.
I know this time of year can bring about a wide range of emotional experiences for different individuals. So, whether you are going through a period of lightness, darkness, or anywhere in between (as is often the case), I would love for you to practice presence with me by joining me for a special class that I’m offering this through my beloved home studio, Upper Valley Yoga:
Holiday Season Slow Flow
When: Friday, December 24, 12–1:15 pm
Join me this Christmas eve (in person, on Zoom, or via recording) for a warming, 75 minute slow, gentle flow. This class will strike a balance between deep core work and fluid movements that allow us to find more ease, mobility, and freedom in our bodies. This is a practice to ground us physically as we use breath to cultivate feelings of inner peace and equilibrium. You will leave feeling refreshed, restored, and ready for the days ahead.
Bring your family, invite your friends, and let’s gather to move together!
All ages, bodies, and ability levels are welcome.
